Solving the Space Dilemma: Designing Rooms That Grow with You
With so many industry experts as part of our membership – it’s the perfect place to find useful tips and advice on property and interior dilemmas. Here we asked Figura to give us some tips on ensuring a home changes with you as your family evolves. Karin at Figura delivers these top tips…
“One of the most important aspects of our work is ensuring that spaces can evolve seamlessly over time. Too often, we see rooms designed for a single phase of life, only to become impractical later—leading to costly and disruptive changes.
That’s why we always guide our clients to incorporate 25-35% more storage (and space, where possible) than they initially think they need.
This proactive approach ensures that as a family’s needs shift, their rooms can adapt effortlessly. We purposely avoid designing too rigidly around a single idea, always keeping the future in mind.
Take the playroom, for example. At first, it’s about reachable shelves and toy storage. But before long, it transforms into a games room, a teen snug, or a media space—and later, perhaps a gym or yoga studio. Then, when grandchildren arrive or a new family moves in, it might become a playroom once again.
If a room is too fixed in its original purpose, it becomes a constraint rather than an asset.
The key to long-term flexibility? Investing in well-designed, timeless, and durable cabinetry.
Built-in storage should remain in place, allowing the space around it to evolve naturally. By planning ahead, we don’t just design for today—we create rooms that will work beautifully for years to come.”
